Cataract Surgery in Huntsville, Alabama

One of the most important conditions for good eyesight is a clear lens that lets light pass through to the retina unobstructed. Since the brain uses the light that hits the retina to create and process images that you "see," the way in which the light passes through the lens is paramount to your vision. In accordance with their commitment to help improve patients' eyesight, the surgeons at our practice offer cataract surgery to patients from Huntsville, other North Alabama areas, and Southern Tennessee. If you would like to receive a cataract screening or would simply like to learn more about cataracts, please contact the Huntsville Center for Sight today.

What is a cataract?

A cataract, or a cloudy lens, results from structural deterioration and typically occurs with age. Because good vision relies on the amount of light passing through the lens on its way to the retina, cataracts diminish good eyesight. Cataracts may also cause blurry vision, glare, and difficulty seeing in bright lights. In addition, cataracts can lead to the yellowing or fading of color perception, double vision, unstable vision, and more frequent changes in corrective lens prescriptions.

Unfortunately, cataracts can make the performance of daily tasks and activities increasingly frustrating and difficult. If you believe that you may have cataracts, please contact the Huntsville Center for Sight as we offer free cataract screenings during our monthly seminars and by appointment. After the screening, if you do have cataracts, one of our surgeons will review with you your options, such as cataract surgery. We look forward to serving our North Alabama and Southern Tennessee neighbors.

What can I do if I have cataracts?

When a cataract is detected, there are two possible courses of action to take. The first is to simply endure the decreasing quality of vision and to offset those changes by adjusting your corrective lens prescription accordingly. Studies have shown that consistently adjusting the prescription can help to delay the need for cataract surgery. In addition, glasses and sunglasses with UV protection have been proven to decelerate the development of cataracts.

The second option is cataract surgery. After a screening, the surgeons at our Huntsville Center for Sight, which serves North Alabama areas, including Decatur, may recommend that you undergo the procedure, depending on how far your cataracts have developed. The procedure is typically recommended to patients whose performance of daily tasks is affected by cataracts.

Cataract surgery is a relatively simple procedure in which the surgeons at the Huntsville Center for Sight have gained extensive experience. The procedure is a popular option for patients with cataracts, as more than two million patients in the United States undergo the surgery each year; 98 percent of these procedures result in better vision.

During cataract surgery, a small incision is created in the eye through which the cataract is removed. The old lens is then replaced with an intraocular lens implant. Though cataract surgery doesn't require the use of lasers, surgeons use lasers in about 25 percent of cataract surgeries to eliminate a cloudy membrane that can develop behind the implant.

You will be required to schedule multiple appointments following cataract surgery at our practice, which serves Huntsville and all of North Alabama, so that our doctors can check on how well your eye heals.
